LONDON. — Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been defrauded of an amount close to £250 000 by a travel agent.

According to Portuguese daily newspaper Jornal de Noticias, Ronaldo, who scored against West Ham United on Sunday to make it four goals in just three appearances since rejoining United, had trusted travel agent Maria Silva with his credit card details and pin code.

She committed the scam by getting clients to deposit cash into her personal account rather than the travel agency’s business account for travel she had arranged for them. It is claimed that the amount she scammed from Ronaldo equates to about 200 trips that the Red Devils star never made between his home country, the US, Africa, as well as other European nations.

The all-time leading men’s international goalscorer was not the only prominent individual cheated out by Silva, though, with it being said that Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes and former United attacker Nani had also been fleeced of more than £14 000 and £1 500, respectively. Ronaldo and his lawyer Carlos Osorio de Castro are understood to have flown to Porto in a private jet to give a statement to the police. It is reported that the travel agent has since been given a four-year suspended prison sentence for her crimes at a court in the Portuguese city after she made a confession. — AFP
