A gang of about 18 robbers, using three getaway cars, waylaid a man in central Harare and robbed him of US$52 000 on Sunday.

The robbery was captured on CCTV.

Two of the man appeared in court yesterday for robbing the unnamed complainant.

Tapiwanashe Murefu, 26, and Tawanda Mutuma, 30, were granted $100 000 bail each when they appeared before Harare magistrate Evelyn Mashavakure and will be back in court on May 8.

The State said on Sunday, at around 4pm, the duo teamed up with Jeffrey Chipwanyira and 16 others, who are all on the run, to rob the complainant.

The court heard that the gang was in three different getaway cars and pounced on the complainant, who was coming from Bhola Hardware in Harare Street.

They confronted the complainant, snatched a satchel containing US$52 000 he was carrying and drove off.

The complainant reported the matter to the police in the Kopje area.

Investigations led to the arrest of Murefu and Mutuma.

The State said US$1 000 was recovered from Murefu and US$500 from Mutuma.

The State said the gang was captured on CCTV committing the offence.

Zebedia Bofu appeared for the State.
